Lucky Jim wins for 17th time in 18 starts with Breeders Crown Trot

Lucky Jim capped a near-perfect season by capturing the $600,000 Breeders Crown Open Trot at the Meadowlands Racetrack on Saturday night for his 17th win in 18 starts.

Coming off a world-record tying performance in his last start two weeks ago, Lucky Jim was put on the lead by driver Andy Miller on the backstretch and held off a challenge by Arch Madness at the top of the stretch en route to a 1 1/2-length victory.

The gelded son of SJ's Photo trotted the mile over a good track in 1:52.1, two seconds slower than he posted on Hambletonian day two weeks ago. The Julie Miller-trained 4-year-old returned $2.10 and $2.10 as the prohibitive favorite in the six-horse field. There was no show betting.

Arch Madness paid $3.60 to place.

The win was a record 14th straight at the Meadowlands this year, and it clearly made Lucky Jim the most serious contender to Hambletonian winner Muscle Hill for the horse of the year honors. His only loss this year came on July 25 when he finished third in the Maple Leaf Trot at Mohawk to San Pail, who was not supplemented to the Breeders Crown.

Immediately after the race, Andy Miller said that Lucky Jim would not race again this year but would return next year.

"Tonight, I don't know if the track suited him the best, but he ended up in the winner's circle," Andy Miller said.

Buck I St Pat set a stakes record for the Breeders Crown Open Mare Trot in the following race, covering the mile in 1:52. The old record of 1:53.1 was set by Peaceful Way at Mohawk in 2005.

Driver Tim Tetrick made a four-wide move with favored Buck I St Pat at the top of the stretch and drew off to a three-length victory over Lavec Dream in the $250,000 race. The Ron Burke-trained 6-year-old mare returned $4.40, $3 and $2.60 in winning for the sixth time in 12 starts this year.

Burke also captured the $500,000 Open Pace when longshot Won The West ($33.40) posted the fastest mile in the 25-year-history of the Breeders Crown, winning in 1:47. The Jim Morrill Jr.-driven 6-year-old made a late move along the inside to win by a little more than a length over favored Shadow Play.

Hana Hanover ($28.20) set a stakes record in winning the $331,500 Breeders Crown Open Mare Pace in 1:48.4 with George Brennan in the bike. The old mark was 1:49.2 set by Always Cams in 2004 and matched by Burning Point in 2006.

Windfall Blue Chip ($3.40) remained undefeated with a three-quarter-length victory over Payne's Landing in the $445,400 Woodrow Wilson pace for 2-year-olds. The George Teague-trained son of Art Major covered the mile in 1:51.4 in winning his fourth straight race and giving driver Brain Sears back-to-back wins in this race. He won last year with Major In Art.

Favored Western Moonlight ($3.60) took the lead on the backstretch and scored a length victory in capturing the $444,300 Sweetheart for 2-year-old fillies in 1:52.3. Dave Miller drove the Jim Campbell-trained winner, who won for the fourth time in six starts.
