<div id="subtitle">Sara Lee's fiscal 2nd-quarter earnings by category at a glance</div><div><p>Sara Lee Corp. reported a profit in the second-quarter versus a year-ago loss, helped by cost cutting. Sara Lee has shed several lines to focus on its core food and beverage business and improve its profitability.</p><p>It earned $371 million in the quarter that ended Dec. 26, or 53 cents per share, compared with a loss of $17 million, or 2 cents per share, a year earlier. Excluding one-time items, it earned 36 cents per share on revenue that was nearly flat at $2.86 billion.</p><p>Here's how each segment did.</p><p>_ North American retail — including brands such as Jimmy Dean, Hillshire Farm and Ball Park meat products:</p><p>Sales flat at $745 million.</p><p>Volume fell 2.7 percent.</p><p>_ North American fresh bakery — including store-brand and Sara Lee baked goods:</p><p>Sales fell nearly 8 percent to $499 million.</p><p>Volume fell 4.2 percent.</p><p>_ North American food service — which supplies restaurants, schools and businesses:</p><p>Sales fell 14 percent to $529 million.</p><p>Volume fell 2.9 percent.</p><p>_ International beverage — including single-serve and instant coffee:</p><p>Sales rose 15 percent to $884 million.</p><p>Volume rose 4.8 percent.</p><p>_ International bakery — Sara Lee baked goods:</p><p>Sales rose 7 percent to $211 million.</p><p>Volume fell 2.8 percent.</p><p>___</p><p>Source: Sara Lee Corp.</p><img src="http://admatch-syndication.mochila.com/images/ad.gif?aid=68464409&bid=informcom" /></div><div id="copyright"><div>
